The poor conditions of the planet demand urgent attention, proof of this is the commitment recently made by COP26 on one of the issues of greatest concern: global deforestation.
According to the UN , more than one billion people depend on forests for their livelihood, these are fundamental to integrate ecosystems, maintain water supply, control soil erosion, protect biodiversity, and are also sources of raw Materials.
However, in 2020 alone in Mexico, 55% of the Chile Mobile Number List territory was affected by water and wind erosion. While last year, SEMARNAT reported that more than 650 thousand hectares of forest were impacted by fires. So with the purpose of mitigating such a problem, we are betting on technology and one of its most innovative tools: drones for reforestation.
drones to reforest the environment
Precision Ecological Restoration with drones to reforest
As mentioned, reforestation is essential to improve environmental conditions. This is part of ecological restoration, understood as a long-term commitment to lands and resources, based on eliminating or modifying a specific alteration, as well as repairing those alterations to allow ecological processes to recover on their own.
With this panorama in mind, Bayer —a global company with key competencies in Life Sciences: Health and Agriculture—guided by its corporate purpose Science for a Better Life, has developed the Precision Ecological Restoration sustainability pilot program .
drones to reforest
Its objective is to contribute to the restoration of ecosystems to stop and reverse soil degradation in Mexico, reaffirming its commitment to continue promoting innovative tools in favor of sustainability.
This program works through drones to reforest, that is, drones optimize the reforestation process because they reduce costs, allow larger areas to be reforested, and help disperse hundreds of thousands of seeds in remote places.
For the Precision Ecological Restoration program , two types of drones were used:
Drone with multi-spectral camera: Obtains images of the topography of the area where the dispersion was carried out.
Multi-rotor drone: It has the capacity to load up to two kilograms of seeds, which has a seed disperser developed by Mexican engineers.
drones to reforest
This is especially relevant because in the last three years more than 1.4 million hectares have been lost and only 57 thousand hectares have been reforested, which represents only 4% of the affected area. Thanks to this, Bayer de México reaffirms its commitment to sustainability:
At Bayer we are committed to contributing, through science, innovation and technology; to care for the environment, natural resources, face the climatic challenges of the future and guarantee the food security of a constantly growing population.
The “Precision Ecological Restoration” program is a clear example of the multiple benefits that innovative tools, such as drones, can provide in favor of sustainability.

Using drones for reforestation brings multiple environmental and precision benefits for ecological restoration. And below we will tell you where this socially responsible program was carried out.
Sinaloa and Chihuahua: Pioneer spaces of this program
The Precision Ecological Restoration program seeks to recover vegetation and protect soils with the use of drones to reforest in sites of high importance for water infiltration, such as in the two basins located in the states of Sinaloa and Chihuahua. This will generate:
A positive impact on the environment.
Benefit to rural and urban communities, agricultural producers, ecosystems and industries.
Additionally, as part of the program, 10 scholarships will be provided per location to take the online Diploma on “Water Management and Source Protection” that will facilitate the sustainable management of hydrographic basins in the respective areas.

During the second quarter of 2021, Bayer carried out a pilot restoration test of 252 hectares of forests in:
Sinaloa
In Sinaloa, according to a study carried out in 2017, the municipalities of Fuerte and Choix present an average deforestation of 2,849 hectares per year. Therefore, in April 2021, Bayer carried out a restoration pilot test in the Ejido Agua Caliente Grande, in the Municipality of Choix.
Chihuahua
Chihuahua is a state that, in the last 10 years, has lost more than half a million hectares of forests due to forest fires and clandestine logging. However, only 65 thousand hectares have been reforested, so there is a loss of more than 400 thousand hectares of forests.
In June 2021, Bayer implemented this program, specifically in the Florido River and San Pedro River with the purpose of using drones to reforest and improve watersheds, as well as other environmental elements.
As has been observed, through Bayer's Precision Ecological Restoration program , the aim is to recover hectares of fertile land and improve water filtration in two basins located in the states of Sinaloa and Chihuahua, which are also basic for the development of economic activities such as agriculture.
Through this commitment, Bayer also joins the UN initiative called Decade of Ecological Restoration , whose goal is to restore 350 million hectares in the world. In addition, these actions reinforce the company's commitment to guarantee food security and contribute to the restoration of vegetation to stop and reverse soil degradation in Mexico.
Reforestation drones are charting a path that is just beginning, but has great potential for growth and success to recover forests.
This is just the beginning of a project that seeks to bring together other actors from the public and private sectors, academia and civil society organizations so that together they can achieve a favorable impact in favor of our ecosystems and society.
