The effect owes its name to experiments that were carried out at that factory, Hawthorne Works , in Illinois (United States). Between 1924 and 1933, some industrial psychologists, including the famous Elton Mayo, considered what to do to increase the productivity of their workers . They made several changes to make it more effective. Actions were carried out such as modifying rest schedules, varying the length of the working day, changing the way of lighting work areas as well as the weather conditions. Results were obtained that attracted a lot of attention. If the lights were brightened, productivity increased; If the lighting was increased a little more, productivity also increased. If, on the other hand, the lights were turned off until the factory was almost dark, productivity also increased. The surprise was that whatever was done, productivity increased . Instead, extra pay was introduced for workers and productivity then fell.
What was the reason for this effect on productivity? Investigating what had happened, it was discovered that upon observing all these changes, the workers had become a little alarmed San Marino Email List and had gathered among themselves. They thought that if they increased productivity and there was extra pay, what would happen in a short time was that there would be layoffs. The conclusion emerged. There seemed to be a direct relationship between an external observation and increased productivity . The fact that the worker feels observed was the real reason that the level of productivity increased. There are several lines of justification for this fact, depending on the experts who have delved into this study. There are those who conclude that seeing themselves as a sample within an experiment made workers more productive. Others thought that they were well valued in their work for being included in the experiment, so they improved their performance probably in response to feeling special and important . It has even been valued that this increase in productivity was a consequence of the kindness and know-how and planning of the experiment on the part of the researchers.
That “good vibes” generated that increase in productivity. This warm climate in which the workers' demands were met made them feel heard , generating a good climate of communication and collaboration between management and workers. It was in 1953 when it was decided to give the name the Hawthorne Effect to this curious response of the workers, in honor of the factory where the research was carried out. worker-observed-blogseas The Hawthorne effect has not been proven Other researchers have concluded that everything is a coincidence and that it is false that by feeling observed we improve the way we work. It should be said that, currently, despite Elton Mayo's efforts, there is not enough evidence to demonstrate the existence of this effect as such.
